Saving Scotland's Red Squirrels (North East)

Managed by:

Scottish Wildlife Trust

Project Description

To undertake a three year action plan to improve conditions and habitat for red squirrels which have declined due to the increase in non-native grey squirrels.  Aberdeenshire’s thriving red squirrel population is now under threat.  A proportion of the total project costs are eligible for the rural Aberdeenshire area and capital and staff costs are included.  A project officer will identify priority sites working with communities to increase conservation awareness and encouraging public involvement in surveying and habitat management.

Quote from Participating Organisation

Nicola McGovern, PR Officer, Scottish Wildlife Trust:

“Thanks to LEADER funding, Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels (SSRS) will soon begin essential work to help save Scotland’s red squirrels, whose future survival is under threat due to the spread of the American grey squirrel. The non-native species out-competes red squirrels for food and habitat and, without our vital work in Aberdeenshire, will threaten the continued existence of this emblematic Scottish species across the whole of northern Scotland.”
