Aberchirder Square Environmental Improvements

Managed by:

Aberchirder and District Community Association

Project Description

The project will see a range of works undertaken to enhance Aberchirder Square which will promote civic pride, ensure the Square is a worthy center piece of the Conservation area within the village and create an environment which will encourage economic activity in the area.  The area will be landscaped providing new benches, trees, traditional lampposts and an island surrounding the Victorian fountain.

Quote from Participating Organisation

Bob Peden, Chairman of Aberchirder & District Community Association

“For the last thirteen years the Community Association has worked to provide Aberchirder with improved facilities and a pleasant environment. Three years ago a community consultation produced a Community Plan which showed that the top issue for local people was the desire to enhance the traditional Square. Further consultations led to plans to return the area around the Auchinachie Fountain to its former role as an attractive meeting place, which in turn will help to revitalise the centre of the village.

Of the total cost of £84,000 Aberdeenshire Council has pledged £50,000 and the Association just over £4,400. The LEADER award is the final piece of the jigsaw and means that, at long last, we can begin a project which will let us take pride in the Square as the centre-piece of our historic planned village. The award also shows that community-led planning can work.”
