Community Radio for the Southern Mearns

Managed by:

Mearns Community Radio

Project Description

Mearns Community Radio is a community radio station, covering Kincardine & Mearns which acts as a platform for the community to have a voice.  The radio promotes local events, businesses and issues and provides technical training in recording and broadcasting community radio.

The project is to undertake work on the transmitter mast and radio station on Collardo Hill, Laurencekirk to enable local community radio service provision in the area.  The project has strong community focus and young people are encouraged to become involved and will be given training in the technical and social skills required for broadcasting.

Quote from Participating Organisation

Ian Hunter, Convener, Mearns Community Radio

“LEADER funding means Mearns FM, the new community radio station in the Mearns can finally secure its transmission network.  Failure to secure the funding before this Winter may have been devastating for the project as the signals for Laurencekirk and Inverbervie are relying on the temporary aerial on the Garvock Hill which may not withstand extreme weather.  This would have halted the young people initiatives being progressed with Mearns Academy, the Mearns Youth Forum and Inverbervie Primary school.  There are also other projects being planned for that area including one at Benholm Mill and they too would have come to a halt.”
