LEADER is an integral element within the Scotland Rural Development Programme 2007-2013 which is a major £1.6 billion programme of support for rural Scotland up to 2013. The SRDP and LEADER are funded by the Scottish Government and the European Commission.

LEADER has been delivered across rural Scotland by Local Action Groups since 2008.

LEADER is an innovative rural development programme which aims to improve the quality of life and economic prosperity in rural communities through locally driven rural development initiatives and projects.

LEADER in Rural Aberdeenshire focuses on two key themes, namely:

  • Revitalising Communities
  • Progressive Rural Economy.

LEADER funds in approved projects require to be matched by a combination of public and private sector funds. Participants in the programme require to identify match funding which may come from a variety of sources, for example, public agencies and private contributions.

LEADER stands for:

Liaisons Entre Actions de Developpement de L'Economie Rurale
(Links between actions for the development of the rural community)
